Lazy Days @ Greenan Maze

Lazy Days @ Greenan Maze

Greenan Maze is a little gem at the heart of Wicklow near Rathdrum. It was a while since we had visited so last weekend I took my Son -12yrs- and his good friend for a visit. It didn’t disappoint!

The moment we arrived the boys jumped out of the car and raced into the Maze with me huffing and puffing along behind them calling “wait for me!” suddenly realising that I could also get lost. I seem to remember writing a computer algorithm in college to navigate a maze… KEEP LEFT was the key to finding your way out. But the boys had disappeared somewhere ahead of me and I had long since forgotten to take my bearings. Thankfully all at once we arrived at the secret pond in the center for a brief hooray before the boys turned to race again fro the entrance! Thankfully the boys wanted to do it again and again so I retreated to the viewing tower to survey their antics from above.

There is plenty to discover in the 3 small museums onsite; the Farm Museum, Old Farmhouse and Bottle Museums all offer a wonderful vignette into traditional farming life. There is also a more contemplative Solstice Maze and tranquil Wild Nature Walk that meanders through unspoiled woodlands and wetlands teeming with dragonflies and an abundance of native flora & fauna.

Greenan Maze and Tearooms are open 7 days throughout July & August and weekends only in September. Tea, Coffee, Hot Chocolate and snacks are always available in the Green Wheel Craft Shop.
